Content and Usage Guidelines for Kaltura

Content and Usage Guidelines for Kaltura

Summary

The Kaltura System is a Media Management System (MMS) and its purpose is to act as a repository for media (i.e., video & audio). It is the primary media system for the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). This service is not designed for long-term storage of media assets.

Guidelines

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) and Learning Environments (LE) perform a Service Provider function, and therefore it is the responsibility of the users to make sure that they have acquired the proper permissions and rights to post and publish materials via this online environment.

The media uploaded to Kaltura should be owned by Fondren Library or the course’s instructor. Appropriate media does not include streaming service videos (such as iTunes, etc.) nor interlibrary loan (ILL) material. Copyrights are to be observed.

In case of reported violations to copyright laws, the user in violation will be asked by LE to remove the materials from this service. At its discretion, Rice University, OIT, LE, or the Information Security Office (ISO) may close sites, terminate user accounts, or take other actions considered necessary to address any reported violations. These actions may not be enough to satisfy copyright owners, in which case the settlement of the reported violation will be the responsibility of the user and the copyright owner. Learning Environments will, if required, hand over usage records to the appropriate authorities.

The usage of this environment is governed by Rice's policies including the policy on Appropriate Use of Information Technology. For more information on this and other policies and restrictions, please see the Other Resources section below.

File Retention

Files (media) loaded into the Kaltura System are for the support of official university courses. The policy for retention of these files is two years. That is to say that if a particular file has not been accessed in two years, it will be subject to deletion.

If the owner of a media file would like to retain a copy of that file prior to deletion, the owner may download a copy.

This does not apply to assets that belong to Fondren Library.
